Owla

Terms of Service

Effective October 10, 2026

These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) form a binding agreement between you and Owla (“Owla”, “we”, “us” or “our”) governing your access to and use of the Owla application, the owla.study website and related services (together, the “Service”). By creating an account, redeeming an invite code or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms and acknowledge our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Eligibility and accounts

  1. You must be at least 16 years old to use the Service.
  2. To purchase a paid plan, you must have reached the age of majority where you live, or have a parent or legal guardian who accepts these Terms and pays on your behalf.
  3. An account is required. You may register with an email address or, where we have issued you one, an invite code. You are responsible for keeping access to your email account secure: anyone able to open a sign-in link sent to it can access your Owla account.
  4. You must provide accurate information and keep it current.

2. The Service and its limitations

Owla is a note-taking tool that reads handwritten work, uses artificial-intelligence models to identify possible errors, provides an AI tutor, and can read problems from images you import.

AI output may be inaccurate. The Service may miss genuine errors, flag correct work, misread handwriting or imported material, and give incorrect explanations. It is a study aid, not a source of authoritative answers. You remain solely responsible for your work and for verifying anything you rely on.

3. Academic integrity

You agree to use the Service in accordance with the academic-integrity rules of your school and instructors, and not to use it where those rules prohibit AI assistance, including during examinations or graded assessments.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  1. upload content that is unlawful or that you do not have the right to use (importing problems from course materials for your own study is permitted);
  2. circumvent usage limits, rate limits or payment, or access the Service through scripts or other automated means;
  3. access or attempt to access other users’ data, interfere with or overload the Service, or reverse-engineer it, including to extract prompts, credentials or model configuration;
  4. sell, sublicense or share access to your account.

5. Your content

You retain ownership of everything you write, upload or import (“Your Content”). You grant Owla a limited, non-exclusive licence to store, copy and process Your Content, including by transmitting it to the service providers described in the Privacy Policy, solely to operate the Service for you, maintain it, and improve its accuracy. We do not claim ownership of Your Content and do not use it to train AI models.

6. Plans and payment

  1. Free use. Free accounts are subject to usage limits shown in the app. When a limit is reached, checking pauses until the limit resets.
  2. Design partners. Accounts created with an invite code receive the Plus plan free of charge until we notify you otherwise.
  3. Paid plans. Where paid plans are offered, the price, billing period and any applicable taxes are shown before you subscribe, and that price applies to you. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until cancelled. You may cancel at any time in Settings; you keep access until the end of the period already paid for. Except where required by law, partial periods are not refunded. Deleting your account cancels any subscription immediately without refund. If a payment fails and is not resolved, your account reverts to the free tier.
  4. Fair use. Each plan includes an amount of AI checking measured over a rolling 30-day period. If it is reached, checking pauses until earlier usage falls outside that period. To prevent automated abuse, checking may also pause for up to 24 hours on any account whose usage greatly exceeds what a person writing by hand could produce.
  5. Price changes. We will give you at least 30 days’ notice before a price change applies to an existing subscription. The new price takes effect at your next renewal, and you may cancel before then.
  6. Payment processing. Payments are processed by Stripe, Inc. under its own terms. We do not receive or store your full card details.

7. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time in Settings. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms, misuse the Service, or if we discontinue it. Except in cases of serious misuse, we will give you reasonable notice and an opportunity to export your notes, and if we discontinue the Service we will refund the unused portion of any prepaid plan.

8. Disclaimer of warranties

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, availability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. Some jurisdictions do not allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Owla is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, including loss of marks, grades or data, arising from your use of the Service or reliance on its output. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amounts you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim and CAD $20. Nothing in these Terms limits any right you have under consumer-protection law that cannot be waived.

10. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time and will revise the effective date above when we do. For material changes we will notify you in the app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the Service after that date constitutes acceptance; if you do not agree, you may cancel and delete your account.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable there. If you are a consumer, you also retain the protection of the mandatory laws of the place where you live.
